It takes us a while to understand what Brandon is doing, and then we realize that Walter knows what he's doing -- and is seeing him, and raising him. There are moments here, including one moment before a live TV broadcast, where Walter is pushing his whole stake into the pot, and the game isn't poker, it's life.

Is the movie a realistic portrait of these kinds of people in this kind of business? I'm not an expert, but I doubt it. What I don't understand is how Walter finds out how much his clients bet, so he can collect his percentage. Bookies aren't real good at sharing information, especially for the benefit of an operation devoted to out-handicapping them.

And besides, there are a lot of bookies. Why can't I get the tips from Walter's company, bet a grand with a bookie he knows about, and 10 grand with some guy he doesn't know about? This is a problem, but it is not a problem that bothers me. It's a classic MacGuffin.

The point is that something happens on the second floor that means Walter and Brandon and the telephone guys make a pile of money when Brandon correctly predicts the weekend games, and they do it without placing bets or taking bets. That's what we need to know. Everything else is dialogue, direction, acting and energy.

I've been watching Pacino a long time. I saw him at the beginning, in , in "Panic in Needle Park. His next movie was " The Godfather. But good as he already was, I think something rotated inside and clicked as he was directing his documentary "Looking for Richard" , which was about how Shakespeare should be acted, and how an actor should play Richard III. Here was an actor in his mids, asking undergraduate questions, reinventing how he approaches a role, asking what acting is.

He chose " Richard III ," a character who looks in a mirror and asks himself how he should play himself. In his movies since then, Pacino seems to have found something in the mirror. View All Critic Reviews Feb 25, In this typical rise and demise story Matthew McConaughey is fresh-faced young men and a washed-up football player turned sports tipster - Brandon Lang. He has very high rate of accuracy catching the attention of sports gambling kingpin Walter Abrams Al Pacino and he quickly makes him his golden boy.

Walter lives a high-flying lifestyle but all that is just an appearance - his marriage isn't as secure as it first appears - his wife the role played terribly by Rene Russo and Walter are recovering gambling addicts and it seems that one of them is back to the old habits! Things get complicated when Brandon's lucky streak dries up just when Walter needs it most. I was disappointed after more than 2 hours of watching this film and the main problem was that there isn't nearly enough plot here to sustain its lengthy running time.

The director tried hard to introduce some sub-plots but they just vanished or somehow never fully developed. The initial set-up will keep your attention but towards the middle this film rapidly loses its way and the climax is a real downer - badly written and incredibly unsatisfying! Of course, for all the female fans, there is more than few shots of McConaughey's naked torso, while the guys can enjoy the shouting mode of Al Pacino.

Badly written and poorly directed! Panta O Super Reviewer. Dec 06, An entertaining movie with an interesting and a bit of a maniac with the sole thought of winning in gambling. Rodrigo R Super Reviewer. Mar 01, The story is about Brandon Lang Matthew McConaughey , a pro footballer whose career is cut short by an injury. He's hired by Walter Abrams Al Pacino , the owner of a big betting agency, who helps turning him into a personality and earning loads of money.

At first, the partnership between Lang and Abrams is flawless. Lang takes on a new name, John Anthony, and a new sense of confidence. He is consistent with his picks and the two rake in millions in cash. But then things start to go wrong and both men are pushed to the limit. The end is very unpredictable and I must say touching. Exciting and thought-provoking, this is a terrific movie all around. Deb S Super Reviewer. Jan 27, This movie sucks like a vacuum!

Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey have done excellent work showing the emotional process of winning and losing bets, while also describing how the whole industry works. She is starting as a stripper Rebeca Hall and then she meets Dirk Bruce Willis and discovers a huge aptitude for sports betting.

After a lot of convincing, Dirk promised her a spot at his sports betting company, and Beth accepts immediately. She spent days investigating and blogging about legal sportsbooks and offshore bookies, being a natural talent to spot a person who loves the uncertainty of sports betting. Eventually, her research does not depict gamblers who are not interested in a positive way of living but shows them as individuals addicted to a life full of possibilities.

The movie is trying to show a humanistic look towards unusual individuals and psychology of everyday bettors. The film succeeded in washing away negative stereotypes of sports betting players. The World Series was one of the biggest sports controversies in history so far, and Eight Man Out is based on those events. Eight players of the baseball team Chicago White Sox have conspired with important persons in the sports betting industry were banned for life from sports after intentionally playing bad.

Walter takes Brandon under his wing, and soon they are making tremendous amounts of money. Lang's in-depth knowledge of the game, leagues, and players brings in big winnings and bigger clients. Abrams's cable television show, The Sports Advisors , skyrockets in popularity when he adds Lang's slick "John Anthony" persona to the desk, infuriating Jerry Sykes, who up to now has been Walter's in-house expert. Lang's total image is remade with a new car, new wardrobe, and a new look, with the assistance of Walter's wife, Toni, a hair stylist.

Things suddenly go south, however, when Lang begins playing his hunches instead of doing his homework. He loses his touch and is even physically assaulted by the thugs of a gambler who lost a great deal of money following Lang's advice. Abrams and Lang's once-solid relationship sours. Lang's new high-rolling lifestyle depends entirely on his ability to predict the outcomes of the games. Millions are at stake by the time he places his last bet, and Abrams, a recovering gambling addict and alcoholic, grows increasingly unstable.

He secretly begins gambling all of his own money on Lang's picks and becomes suspicious that Lang is having an affair with his wife. The film concludes with Lang's predictions coming true for the last game, both of which he allegedly determines by flipping coins in a bathroom, as he leaves New York and takes a job as coach of a junior league football team.

Marjorie Baumgarten. James Berardinelli. Richard Roeper. Critics are likely to interpret Pacino's work as intentional self-parody, because he's smart enough to know that he's played this kind of unhinged father figure too many times. Dan Fienberg. Two for the Money runs hot and cold. While I did appreciate some elements of the film, it couldn't overcome a dreadful final act that sinks an otherwise amiable film.

The initial set-up is interesting enough but the film rapidly loses its way in the middle and ends up a horribly confused mess, with sub-plots and entire characters simply disappearing into thin air.
